Simple touch
Set within the open countryside of Dartmoor National Park, this project demanded persistence, sensitivity, and absolute attention to detail. Strict planning policies meant every move had to be carefully justified—yet the result is a transformation that redefines what the property can be.
The first challenge was to rework the chalet bungalow’s upper floor. Previously constrained, it has been opened up into dramatic, livable spaces that capture and frame the panoramic views. With new volumes and carefully positioned glazing, the first floor now feels both expansive and deeply connected to the surrounding landscape.
A complete side extension was also delivered—designed so subtly that it feels as if nothing has changed. Achieved through proportion, material choice, and detailing, this addition integrates seamlessly with the original form. At its heart lies a bedroom entirely lined and crafted in timber: warm, tactile, and indulgent. This space offers pure luxury, turning the everyday into something extraordinary.
Whilst modest in scale, this project demonstrates what can be achieved with design persistence and careful negotiation. It shows how bold ideas, handled with respect for policy and place, can unlock the potential of a home—creating something truly stunning in Dartmoor’s most sensitive landscape.
